(Sept. 17, 2007) - UC Riverside Baseball Coach Doug Smith has withdrawn his name from consideration for the vacant UC Irvine baseball head coaching position, he announced Monday.

"I contacted UC Irvine Interim Athletic Director Paula Smith today and told her of my decision," Smith said. "It was an honor to be contacted regarding the position, but Riverside has been my home for a long, long time. In discussing it with my wife Ruthan, we decided it would be in our best interest to stay at UCR, particularly because the University has demonstrated how much they want me to be here."

"I am really looking forward to working with this group of guys this season," he added.

UC Riverside Athletics Director Stan Morrison was thrilled at Smith's decision.

"Speaking for the Department of Athletics, we are overjoyed that Doug has decided to stay here at Riverside," Morrison said. "He is a winner, and with the outstanding young men he has returning and the exceptional recruiting class he has coming in, I believe that his team can build upon what was accomplished last season and continue to ascend in 2008."
