Highlanders Can’t Tame LMU Offense

Box Score

(April 22, 2008) - UC Riverside dropped a 7-1 decision to Loyola Marymount in a non-conference match-up at the Riverside Sports Complex Tuesday afternoon. Jordan Opdyke and Tony Nix each finished with two hits for the Highlanders who fall to 11-24 overall on the season.

LMU (20-20) recorded 16 hits off of five Highlander pitchers and also took advantage of two UCR errors to take the season series, two games to none. The Lions put up single runs in the first and second innings before using six hits to bring across four runs in the fourth.

UCR scored a run in the fifth on an RBI base-hit by Trevor Hairgrove that scored Opdyke who had led off the inning with a single. The Highlanders made some noise in the eighth as Nix started the inning with a single and then moved up to second two batters later after Joey Gonzales walked. A wild pitch then moved both runners into scoring position for UCR leading hitter Drew Garcia. Lion reliever Andy Beal was able to get Garcia to fly out to end the Highlander threat.

Starter D.J. Smith saw his record drop to 1-1 after allowing two earned runs in his two innings. Gonzales saw his 10-game hit streak come to an end. A.J. LaMonda led the way for LMU, finishing 4-for-4. Nate Keadle picked up the win after allowing just the one run in seven innings.

The Highlanders host Cal State Northridge for a Big West Conference three-game series beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
