18, 2008) - UC Riverside could not get past UC Irvine ace
Scott Gorgen as the Anteater limited the Highlanders to two
runs as fifth ranked UCI picked up a 7-2 win in Irvine, CA
Friday night. Ben Price drove in both UCR runs with a two-run
double.
UCR
dropped to 9-23 overall and 3-4 in the Big West while Irvine
improved to 24-7 overall and 6-4 in the Big West. Gorgen struck
out a career-high 14 hitters in his seven inning effort.
The
Anteaters picked up runs in each of the first five innings,
including a three-run fourth to open up a 6-0 lead. UCR then
answered in the fifth with a one-out two-run double to left
center, bringing home Ryan Goetz and Brandon Schnebly to cut
the lead to 6-2.
After
Irvine added another run, following the Highlander runs in
the fifth, to take a 7-2 lead. Prior to the start of the UCI
half of the sixth, play was suspended after the bank of lights
down the right field line went out, leaving darkness in right
field. The Highlanders were called off the field for nearly
10 minutes before the umpires ordered both teams to resume
play.
Joey
Gonzales picked up a single in the first inning to extend
his hitting-streak to a season-high eight games and Trevor
Hairgrove saw his eight-game hit streak come to an end.
Gorgen
improved to 7-2 after allowed the two earned runs in his seven
innings of work. Penny dropped to 0-5 after allowing six earned
runs in 3.2 innings of work. D.J. Smith held the Anteater
offense to just two hits in his 4.1 innings of relief.

series continues on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
