(April
12, 2008) - UCR could not keep up with a UCLA offense that
picked up 26 hits to hand the Highlanders a 18-7 loss at Jackie
Robinson Stadium in Westwood, CA Saturday afternoon. Joey
Gonzales recorded three hits and drove in three runs for
UC Riverside (9-20).
UCLA
(16-13) had four players finish with four hits a piece as
they used a seven-run second inning and five-run third inning
to take the second game of the three-game series from UCR.
After
allowing the seven runs in the second, the Highlanders continued
to battle by bringing two runs across in the third and three
across in the fourth to cut the Bruin lead to 7-5. But UCLA
answered right back with that five-run fourth to open up a
12-5 lead through four innings.
UCR
made one final push in the seventh, using a two-run homer
from Aaron
Wible to get the game to 12-7. Again the UCLA bats answered
with four runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth to
put the game out of reach.
Six
Highlander pitchers combined to allow 14 earned runs with
starter Matt
Larkins taking the loss after allowing seven earned runs
in 1.2 innings. The Highlanders put up seven runs off of UCLA
starter Charles Brewer in his six-innings of work but the
Bruin offense backed him their highest offensive output of
the season to give him the victory. The
26 hits were the most ever allowed in a game by UCR in their
50-year history.
Gonzales
paced the UCR offense with his three hits, three RBI, and
two runs scored and both Ryan
Goetz and Jordan
Opdyke recorded two hits. Wible’s home run was his
team-leading fifth of the season and Trevor
Hairgrove extended his hitting streak to a career-best
six games.
The
Highlanders wrap up their weekend series with UCLA tomorrow
at 1:00 p.m.
