7, 2008) - UC Riverside dropped a 10-5 decision to Nevada
in the first game of the their weekend series in Reno, NV
Friday afternoon. Senior leftfielder Aaron Wible and junior
second baseman Drew Garcia led the Highlanders (3-9) with
two hits and two RBI apiece.
UCR jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning after junior
centerfielder Carl Uhl led off the game with a double and
later came around to score on Garica's RBI single to right
field. The Wolfpack (4-5) would answer with a run of their
own in the first, scoring a run on a Highlander error to tie
the game at 1-1.
Two innings later, Nevada struck again using a sacrifice fly
and another UC Riverside error to take a 3-1 lead after three
complete.
The Highlanders continued to compete as Uhl brought UCR to
within one after his RBI groundout scored senior third baseman
Ben Price to cut it 3-2 after five innings. The Wolfpack would
put the game away with six runs in the sixth, highlighted
by a three-run homer from Terry Walsh to give UNR a 9-2 lead.
Riverside mounted a small comeback in the eighth, adding three
runs in the inning on an RBI base-hit by Garcia and a two-run
single by Wible. Nevada tacked on another run in their half
of the eighth though and held on for the 10-5 win.
The Wolfpack finished with 10 runs on 13 hits including seven
runs, five earned, and eight hits off of Riverside's junior
starter Stephen Penny (0-2). Rod Scurry (1-2) earned the win
after striking out six in his seven innings of work.
Uhl also recorded two hits and scored two runs for the Highlanders
who will send freshman Matt Larkins to the mound tomorrow
for game two of the series, with the first pitch set for 1:00
p.m.
