(February
26, 2008) - UCR lost a 11-4 decision to #29 Pepperdine in
Malibu, CA Tuesday afternoon. Sophomore Ryan Goetz launched
his first home run of the season and junior Drew Garcia finished
with two hits for the Highlanders (2-3).
The Waves (3-1) banged out 15 hits and overcame a two-run
first inning deficit to pick up the win. UCR jumped out to
an early 2-0 lead after putting two runs across in the first
on a RBI single from senior Aaron Wible and a sacrifice fly
from Goetz.
Highlander freshman starter Eddie Orozco set Pepperdine down
in order in the first but ran into trouble in the next two
innings. Orozco allowed a two-run double in the second and
solo homer in the third. UCR would answer with a run in their
half of the fourth on a one-out blast from Goetz that tied
it at 3-3.
An inning later, the Pepperdine lineup finally got to Orozco,
who was making his first colligate start, putting up three
runs in the inning. The Waves added another three spot in
the seventh after a series of hits against the Highlander
bullpen that struggled to get outs and keep it close in the
middle innings.
UCR would pick up a run in the seventh on a bases-loaded walk
from sophomore Joey Gonzales that brought home sophomore Bryan
Horst who had walked earlier in the inning. That would all
for the Highlander offense who could not get the big hit with
men on base, stranding 10 throughout the game.
Orozco (0-1) took the loss after allowing six earned runs
and striking out two in 4.2 innings. Matt Bywater (1-0) picked
up the win after striking out six in his 5.2 innings.
The Highlanders travel out to Lincoln, Nebraska for a four-game
series with the Nebraska Cornhuskers beginning on Friday.
UCR and Nebraska split their two meetings last season at the
NCAA Regional in Tempe, AZ.
