Highlanders Split Doubleheader With Washington

(February 23, 2008) - UC Riverside split the two games played against the University of Washington on Saturday at the Riverside Baseball Complex. Sophomore Joey Gonzales picked up three hits and freshman Brett Hambright drove in two runs in the Highlanders (2-1) game one 6-3 win. The Huskies (1-2) picked up the win in game two by a score of 19-4.

The two teams decided on Friday to play the double-header with threatening weather in the forecast for the next two days.

In the first game, UCR plated two runs in the second inning on RBI singles by junior Drew Garcia and Hambright to give the Highlanders an early 2-0 lead. They would add another in the third on senior Aaron Wible's base-hit up the middle that brought around Gonzales.

Washington put up two runs in the fourth off of freshman starting pitcher Matt Larkins, using two wild pitches by Larkins followed by a Troy Scott triple to left center that brought home both runners. Larkins would settle down after a rough third and fourth innings as the Huskies cut it 4-3 with another run in the fourth.

The Highlanders picked up some insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings on RBI singles from Gonzales and Hambright to give UCR a 6-3 lead they would hold on to. Larkins produced a very solid outing, picking up the win after a six-inning, four-strikeout performance in his first collegiate start. Junior Ryan Platt also had an impressive first outing as a Highlander, striking out two and allowing only one hit in his three innings of relief to pick up his first career save.

In game two, the Huskies put up eight runs in the first three innings off of Highlanders sophomore starter Paul Applebee. The Highlanders later answered the Washington offensive outburst with back-to-back RBI singles by junior Carl Uhl and senior Ben Price in the fifth to make it 9-3. But UW would come right back with a four spot in the sixth and added on some runs late, finishing with 23 hits and 19 runs.

Huskies starter Elliot Cribby held the Highlanders to one unearned run in six innings to hand Riverside their first loss of 2008.

The Highlanders will close out their season-opening series with UW on Sunday at 1;00 p.m.
