Question:
"I
was reading an old post regarding "Arena Questions".
The subject was bringing in a multi-purpose events complex
to Riverside. I think if UCR could make that kind of an investment,
they will be able keep students on campus during the weekends
and be able to bring in more money for the campus, based on
each venue's earnings. Plus, I think the surrounding communities
would support it, as long as UCR is willing to spend the money
to build one. I know the campus is growing. The Rec Center
isn't going to cut it, for a growing student population and
future events. Are there plans in the works, for an events
complex, similar to UCLA's and Irvine's?

"Dear
Mike,
Thanks for your thoughts on an "events complex"
here in Riverside or on the UCR campus. I certainly do agree
with your thoughts and comments in your inquiry. There is
nothing on the horizon for this kind of venue and funding
will not be forthcoming from the campus for one. While we
would all truly love to see such an edifice, I believe the
reality is that there is far more focus and energy being given
to the possibility of a medical school here at UCR. On the
horizon would be a law school as well. That would generate
a ton of excitement both throughout the UC system and certainly
in the Inland Empire. They would not, however, bring the entertainment
theme that your "Ask Stan" question searches for.
I
believe an arena or "events complex" will require
outside, private
funding and a partnership with the City of Riverside. The
politics of that
kind of partnership are not particularly difficult to work
through.
However,
there must be a collective will to make it happen. Campus
priorities have been established and the "events complex"
is not on that
list at this particular time. Hopefully the new $55,000,000
Student Union,
currently under construction on campus, can fill some of that
void. I trust
that this helps you understand my position at this time. Thanks
for asking.
Have a great summer!
