Question:

"Stan

Who is the primary person involved in scheduling for men's basketball? Although I am sure it is a joint effort does the scheduling come from the AD or from the coaching staff? Thanks and keep up the great work!

Stan's Reply :

"Dear Stephen,
It has always been my policy to allow each Head Coach to do their own scheduling. That is certainly the case for Men's Basketball. I do get inquiries from Athletics Directors and coaching friends and pass them along to the appropriate coaches. There are a lot of factors involved in the process that include:
* Guarantees - at home or on the road. We need the money!!
* Holidays - attempting to schedule so players can be at home for Thanksgiving and Christmas, etc.
* Television - scheduling teams that are attractive for television is a great way for program exposure and is encouraged.
* Examinations - UCR policy prohibits scheduling during Final Exams.
* RPI - this one is critical for teams attempting to move up the ladder and aiding the Big West Conference overall profile.
* Potential recruiting areas - it doesn't make sense to schedule in many areas that are not going to be possible recruiting hotbeds for UCR.
Work hard to schedule games in the areas where your team members live.
* Attractive travel - everyone wants to go to Hawaii or play the perennially/historically strong programs... Duke, Stanford, UCLA, Kansas, etc.
* Holiday tournaments - tournament action without concerns for Final Exams, is a great way to get some saturation play (3 games in 3 days), neutral court games, and really get to know your team and what you need for conference play.
* Home and home - you shouldn't play anyone who isn't willing to return the game at UCR. However, with a big enough guarantee, at $40,000+, we will go to an away site without the return game. You need to limit yourself with these.
Stephen, I hope this helps your understanding of scheduling and answers your questions. I look forward to seeing you at UCR Athletics events. Thanks.
